If this is your first move, you will need to visit your local transport authority so they can help you through the process. This applies to your most recent move, whether it's a discharge or retirement, because your rehabilitation rights upon discharge from military service will be different than those earned on previous PCS moves.
You need your hard orders to establish traffic (web orders don't count). At the top of your soldier's paper orders is a set of numbers that you enter into the system. When asked if you have these "hard orders", the system will ask you to enter this number. You will also be asked to indicate which day you would like to pack and load your household goods. When the system prompts you for the address of your next duty station, don't worry if you don't know where you'll be staying! You can simply enter the location of your next duty station and update the information in the system once you know where "home" will be.
You also need to estimate the weight of household items. A general rule of thumb is around £1,000 per room. Obviously the garage could be bigger and the bathroom smaller, but you get the point, right? It is quite normal that if you are not completely accurate in your estimate, the company tasked with delivering your household goods will later schedule a virtual or in-person survey to get a more accurate estimate. Once you have everything set up in DPS, your move will be assigned to a Transportation Service Provider (TSP). This is the company that coordinates all the logistical aspects of your move. This company will assign you a moving coordinator who will be your single point of contact for your PCS process. When they call you, be sure to get their name, phone number, and email address so you can have them handy when you need them (trust me, you'll need this information handy). would like to keep). In addition to assigning your TSP, your TSP may also assign local agents for your shipment. Typically, you have a departure agent (the one who packs your home and loads it onto the truck) and then a destination agent (the one who delivers the household goods to your new home). Again, you will always be coordinating, asking questions, and reporting concerns from your TSP to your relocation coordinator. If you are unable to contact your moving coordinator you can also contact your local transport authority.
Note that. Sometimes it can get confusing trying to figure out which company is designated for each part of your move. Delivery of our household goods is outsourced to companies using Standard Carrier Alpha Code or SCA... (because we really need more acronyms in our lives, right?). These codes are often sold to other companies and there is a chance that you will be assigned to one company when the code number belongs to another company.
