Glock 44 Academy - At last. GLOCK Introducing the GLOCK .22. Well, the GLOCK 22 has been around for a long time, but it came in a .40 Smith & Wesson. Now the GLOCK .22 (like the .22 Long Rifle) is available as the GLOCK 44.
The numbers make my head spin, and the GLOCK announcement is buzzing the internet. It seems to be mostly people teasing the new rimfire pistols. I could see where the laughter was coming from. Heck, I even made a joke, but really, I think the GLOCK 44 is going to be a hit with the .22lr.

Let's take a look at what the GLOCK 44 is and why I think it will be a success.

The new .22 LR GLOCK 44 will come with a threaded barrel sold separately. G44 and threaded barrels will be available on January 20, 2020.
If you think of a GLOCK 19 with a .22 lr mag and polymer slide and a 10 round mag, it's pretty clear what a Glock 44 is.
I haven't had a chance to operate or shoot the 44 yet, but based on the info GLOCK shared about the pistol, the external dimensions are about the same as the 19. Due to the barrel not protruding far enough from the front of the slide), trigger reach (0.04 inches shorter than the 19) and overall weight are the only notable differences in technical data between the two. The Pistol 19 weighs about 23 ounces, while the Glock 44 is a half pound lighter at about 14 ounces.
The difference in weight is due to the GLOCK 19 pistol using a polymer slide instead of a steel slide. Using polymer makes sense to me, but it seems like one of the simpler aspects of the gun. The .22 lr produces significantly less force than the 9mm. Therefore, in order for the GLOCK 44 to be effective, the socket must be much lighter. Lightweight is achieved through the use of aluminum in aftermarket conversion kits. GLOCK, left untouched and likely sold in large numbers, benefits from used plastic. I mean they make plastic guns...

Of course the GLOCK 19 has a magazine capacity of 15 +1 and many other options are available, while the 44 is currently offered in a 10 +1 configuration.
The most obvious difference between the GLOCK 19 (I feel bad I completely ignored the G23...) and the GLOCK 44 is the caliber. The focus of GLOCK has always been the ready-to-use caliber. Security work, duty work. .22 long rifles are none of these things, so why would GLOCK make a .22?
I think there are many good reasons why GLOCK put the time, energy and energy into making the .22, and I think there are many reasons why consumers will snap up these guns. Let's be real. The gun says GLOCK, and for fans of the Austrian company, that's usually the only thing you need to buy.

You understood. The GLOCK 44 is a clone of the GLOCK 19 for many reasons.
One of the most notable aspects of GLOCK pistols is the reliability they offer. Again, I haven't tested it myself, but the 44 is said to be a solid gun. Due to the wide variation in ammunition quality, the G22 is generally an unreliable pistol. I want the GLOCK 44 to act like a GLOCK.
There are plenty of .22s out there, some with solid aftermarket support, but none that can match the support that already exists for the 44. Remember, 19-year-olds can do a lot. Sights, holsters, magazine pouches and more. This post-sale support makes buying more attractive and reduces the need to make additional purchases for those who already own a 19. Of course GLOCK 44 magazines are different. It has a capacity of 10 rounds instead of 15 rounds and 19 rounds.

GLOCKs aren't known for amazing triggers, but they sure are serviceable. Most rimfire pistol triggers are pretty unpleasant unless you like single action .22s. When my two daughters started handjobs, I spent some money on a .22 in the hope of finding something light enough for them to hold and have enough trigger light for them to depress. We went with the 10 round S&W M&P .22 Compact, but the trigger is the same and reliability is what I expect from a .22.
It looks like we can expect the 44 to feature a GLOCK trigger. That's probably still too long to be practical for my kids, but for a normal-sized general population, I'd say it's 44. Will serve them well when triggered.
GLOCK really surprised a lot of people with the release of the GLOCK 44. I don't think it's a revolutionary gun, but I think it will serve GLOCK and its customers well. For some it will be a collectible, for others it will be an episode, for some it will be a trainer, for many it will be their shot first pistol.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the GLOCK 44 to test its reliability and see if the trigger works as expected. Really, the only thing that makes me want is the name...it reminds me of a GLOCK in a .44 Special. Maybe they're saving it for the GLOCK 50?

Although the new pistol has a lower bullet count compared to the smaller primers, the new pistol has all the features, functionality and familiarity of the rest of the GLOCK Gen 5 pistol. TFB was lucky enough to "test" with some of the first G44 pistols at their headquarters in Austria or Georgia. For nearly three months, I have personally loaded GLOCK G19 size pistols in a variety of .22LR ammunition under various conditions and believe wholeheartedly that the G44 represents the excellence of the GLOCK models from the G17 to the G48.
Despite its small size and low power, it was surprisingly difficult to build a gun around the .22LR cartridge - a reliable and accurate cartridge anyway. In fact, it's these low performances, along with ammunition variability, that cause most of the problems with rimfire pistols. Without a sustained powder charge, gun manufacturers would need to make semi-auto rimfire pistols with partial slides/bolts to keep recoil to a minimum. Bullet shape, coating/cleaning and weight also affect performance and reliability.
